[GIVEAWAY + REVIEW] Vapiano, Sydney CBD

A while ago, a few friends have asked me on where I could find affordable Italian in the Sydney CBD area. Usually I would say Cafe Sopra but then the internationally renowned Vapiano (with more than 135 restaurants in 26 countries!) has opened its doors late last year for the hungry office workers in the area like myself. While the queues to order and wait for your food seemed like something you would expect at a fast food outlet, the quality was much better than I expected on my first visit months ago. Recently, I was invited to try the dishes on Vapiano's newly released Spring special menu which got me thrilled and curious to see what they offer.

It was exciting seeing the open kitchen during my previous visits which definitely takes away the boredom as you wait for your meal being prepared. The vibe was noisy and busy at the ground level though I only realised very recently that there was another level upstairs with more seating so you won't need to worry too much about the lengthy queues here.

Raspberry Smash

French Martini

When CC and I stepped inside, we were directed to the bar with a card so we can order our choice of drink. I decided to get the Raspberry Smash, which was fruity and sweet just as I liked it. CC really enjoyed her French Martini cocktail thanks to a suggestion from the bartender. I really liked the look of that cocktail especially the colour. CC thought it was light and sweet.

Villa Maria Arneis Hawkes Bay 2011

During the course of our dinner, we also got to sample a glass of Villa Maria Arneis Hawkes Bay 2011 white wine to pair off with the Pasta Gamberi con Rosso (more on that later). Arneis got its name from the Italians as another word for "little rascal", which was funny since the anniversary reunion of the 90's film happened not long ago (I feel really old...).

Classic Pumpkin Soup ($6.90)

The first dish that I tried from the Spring special menu was the Classic Pumpkin Soup where you can top it up with your choice of Parmesan, cream, croutons, and basil then mopped with freshly baked ciabatta bread. The sample that I tried had cream, which actually didn't deter me at all once I've had a taste. The cream mixed well together with the pumpkin base to deliver a smooth, creamy and flavoursome soup. The grated parmesan cheese, basil garnishes and croutons also mixed well for the balanced texture and extra crunch. Both CC and I enjoyed this soup so much that we were keen to finish it up but we had to save our stomachs for the other dishes.

Pizza Porporano ($19.90)

Another dish I was pleased with was the Pizza Porporano. This was a homemade and tomato mozzarella base topped with premium Aussie air-dried salted beef, rocket, shaved Parmesan and a drizzle of truffle olive oil. I always go crazy every time I could smell that truffle aroma. The base was thin with a fair amount of dough. Thought that the toppings tasted so well together especially with the air-dried salted beef aka bresaola.

Lately I've been very keen on trying the cured meats on charcuterie platters so it was fascinating learning about the origins of the bresaola. It was supplied by Speiss Australia at Wetherill Park in South West Sydney. The bresaola was fermented and air-dried for at least 10 weeks to the point where it loses 40% of its original weight. Although we were eating it with a thin crusted pizza base, the bresaola actually has less than 5% in salt and fat with loads of B vitamins and high protein to strengthen your bones.

Pasta Gamberi Con Rosso ($19.90)

Although I was slowly starting to get full at this point, I was surprised at how light the Pasta Gamberi Con Rosso really was. This contain prawns, chilli, semi-sun dried tomatoes, and sun dried tomato pesto with a pasta of your choice. The pasta itself had an al-dente texture while the semi-sun dried tomatoes with the pesto delivered a fresh and sweet flavour. The lemon wedge also helped in adding a flavour boost to the overall dish.

It was interesting when I noticed that CC got the same dish but with a different pasta shape (I believed the pasta used here was Torchino according to Google search). Apparently this was done on purpose to showcase the range of pasta options available at Vapiano. Personally both CC and I preferred the pasta with the curly edges since it matched well with the accompanied sauce especially with the flavour.

Risotto Pollo Levanto ($19.90)

By the time the Risotto Pollo Levanto arrived to our table, I was getting pretty stuffed from all the carbs (sighs). It was a creamy dish consisting of chicken, bacon, red onion, garlic, and chilli topped with Parmesan and basil. It actually reminded me of a carbonara or boscaiola pasta dish with some of those ingredients. While it was too heavy and creamy for my liking, the risotto rice was well-cooked with  bitey texture plus there was plenty of bacon and chicken to enjoy.

White Chocolate Cheesecake with Salted Caramel and Honeycomb ($5.90)

Although I struggled with the previous dish, somehow there is always room for dessert! Gotta say that this dessert has exceeded my expectations. It was more sweet thanks to the salted caramel and honeycomb. You don't detect much of the cheese initially but you can sense its creamy texture and richness which complements with the sweetness from the other elements of the dessert. At first I wasn't sure if I would finish this dessert at first because of the rich texture but then the biscuit base won me over completely. Gotta love desserts with that firm but crumbly biscuit base.

At Vapiano, the basil plays a common theme throughout many of their dishes as its signature garnish. Throughout the venue, you can spot numerous pots of basil plants that were freshly grown before it's used for the pastas, risottos and other savoury meals.

If you wanna try one of the dishes in this post, you gotta head to Vapiano Sydney on King Street before 31st October because that's when the dishes on the Spring special menu will no longer be available (bit random since Spring doesn't end till November...). Was impressed by the new dishes that Vapiano has delivered on this occasion. It's a convenient location especially if you work around the area and the prices are reasonable in comparison with the portion size. Really liked the spacious layout, the food and the fact that there's always a bowl of free gummy bears to nibble when you leave the restaurant after paying your meal.

[GIVEAWAY + REVIEW] My Tandoori Indian Restaurant, Green Valley via Menulog Food Delivery

Don't forget to check out the giveaway at the end of this post! :)

It's August so the weather is having its mood swings. One week it's bright and sunny with clear blue skies. The next week it's cold, windy and rainy. Then there's a sudden blackout on your street and you are having post-gym hunger cravings (true story). That's where Menulog Food Delivery comes in to save the day. With its own mobile app, you can easily order takeaway online without needing to wait for the electricity to turn back on (though I would recommend eating with a torch or candle next to you).

Long time readers may remember that I have previously reviewed Menulog late last year which was an enjoyable experience getting food delivered to my workplace - apart from a minor mishap with the delivery date from the restaurant (but it was still on the dot). However, I am one of those people who believes in second chances especially when Menulog resolved it immediately without any added burdens.

Menulog has been expanding its list of more than 3500 restaurants offering online delivery and takeaway across Australia. You can use it anytime, anywhere and it's free to use! You can even pre-order in advance if you wish. If you do not have the Menulog app on your phone, it is available to download for free on iTunes and Google Play.

Simply type the postcode or the name of your suburb on the app and you can access countless restaurants available within your area whether it's takeaway or delivery. For a suburb as obscure as Sadleir, I was surprised to see a decent selection of restaurants in the area offering Italian, Lebanese and Indian cuisines.

Since the weather was cold and wet and I already had pizza a few days ago, I decided to go for Indian food this time with My Tandoori as my restaurant pick based on ratings, reviews, specials and the delicious selection of dishes on the menu. Though be mindful of the Minimum Delivery cost!

Select your dishes from the menu and make your order. There are options for certain types of dishes like curries such as the level of spice whether it's mild, medium or hot.

After you made your choices, review and confirm your order then enter your contact and delivery details and voucher code at the checkout. Finally you enter your payment details and away we go!

After the order has been processed, you receive an SMS confirming your order and expected delivery time. Get your stomach ready!

This time, the friendly delivery guy arrived on the dot which has definitely put a smile on my face. Imagine our excitement when we opened up the large bag afterwards.

We started out with the vegetable samosas with slightly spicy mint chutney on the side. The vegetable filling had lots of unusual flavours and seasonings which were crumbled and mashed together inside layers of crispy pastry. Despite the delivery time, the samosas still remained crunchy.

Vegetable Samosas ($6.90 for 2)

There was actually many different types of naan bread available on the My Tandoori restaurant menu including plain, garlic, cheese, Keema (stuffed mince) to name a few. Because the folks enjoy eating garlic bread on the side in the past, I opted for the garlic naan. It did not have that strong garlic taste but was still light, fluffy and perfect to dip with the curries.

Garlic Naan Bread ($2.50)

Finally we dug into the curries starting with the Beef Korma. While the beef was not too soft (but not too hard), the curry had a mild, rich, nutty and creamy taste with a hint of coconut milk which balances everything out in this dish. In fact, the beef helped to soak up the curry juices especially once the milky and creamy taste took over the taste buds. Really liked that the beef cuts used in this curry had no fatty parts attached.

 Beef Korma ($15.90)

The Chicken Tikka Masala was a favourite for me and the folks out of all the dishes. It was a tad spicier than the beef korma since it was cooked in various spices but still mild enough to handle if you aren't a fan of spicy food. It was also incredibly flavoursome and aromatic with loads of soft and tender tandoori chicken. Perfect for dipping with naan bread. The thick and rich curry was so good that we nearly finished this off before the food coma took over.

Chicken Tikka Masala ($15.90)

Really enjoyed the dishes I've had tonight even though it's pricier compared to other local restaurants especially in South-West Sydney. The minimum delivery cost was $35 so I had to order a few more dishes than my stomach could handle but at least there are left-overs to eat again on a later day. After this experience, I am definitely keen to order from My Tandoori Indian Restaurant again at a later date to discover more essential Indian dishes whether it's by delivery, takeaway or dining in.

Product Review & Giveaway: AntiOx Snack Bars and Chocolate

Product talk by Nuffnang

UPDATE: The winners are finally announced! Congrats to Tina@foodfortina and Olivia@Mademoiselle in Sydney for winning the AntiOx prize packs! I'll try to get in contact with you over the next few days on getting your packages or just email me your mailing address to annetran@gmail[dot]com by 31st July 2013. Otherwise we'll have to pick a new winner. Happy snacking!

Hey lovelies! Hungry for the latest restaurant, bar, cafe or foodie trend but you also want to stay fit and healthy? Also are you obsessed with sweets and desserts? Me too! Read on guys :).

I bet you will be wondering what AntiOx really is. You may also be wondering on whether chocolate can ever be considered as something healthy to eat. But seriously...can it?

For those who either know me personally or kept up to date with me on instagram or Twitter, you may know that I have been getting fit. After many many years of delaying action for my weight loss, I finally decided to go to the gym and start eating healthy (sort of). Trying to go on a diet while maintaining this food blog has been incredibly tough especially with so many cool restaurants and bars serving extremely delicious and very unhealthy food (like fried chicken, chips and pasta OMGGG). As of the last 4 months, the weight loss has been surprisingly successful so far. Since it's winter, it has been challenging in trying to stay fit during the colder months and have been falling back into hot comfort food instead of colder salads and wraps but I'm sure when summer arrives, the cold salads will be worth it.

Before shot: December 2012

After shot: June 2013

Which brings me to this. I love chocolate. Especially dark chocolate. Unfortunately, chocolate has that bad stigma when it comes to dieting and weight loss but it is one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Recently there has been news in fitness magazines and articles about dark chocolate being classified as a superfood full on antioxidents thanks to the amount of cocoa. Daily intake of natural antioxidants including fruits, grains and seeds are essential for your body because it boosts your immune system and will help in fighting free radicals that causes poor health especially in the cold winter weather. AntiOx chocolate and snack bars will take care of giving you that boost of antioxidants with 70% cocoa and superfruits and ancient grains (like acai, goji, chia and quinoa) in the mixture. They are also very delicious and sweet...without artificial sweeteners! While I know some people who don't like dark chocolate due to the taste, I think you have been missing out as it is actually quite good for you (in moderation of course!).

In fact, AntiOx Chocolate and Snack Bars use Stevia, which is a natural plant-based sweetener. This means that the chocolate used here is actually sugar free and quite light in comparison to other chocolate available in shops. When sampling the AntiOx chocolate, I found it to be quite fruity and you can immediately taste the cocoa as you bite into the piece. It may not be Lindt but it's a naturally sweet and healthier alternative for whenever you get chocolate cravings. AntiOx chocolate is available in two varieties: Acai (this type of berries has more antioxidants than other known berries) and Goji (rich with vitamins especially vitamin C, antioxidants and essential minerals). While this is predominantly dark chocolate, you can taste the Acai/Goji fruits as you chew into each piece. If you're not a fan of green tea but you would like to improve your immune system, you will be happy to know that the amount of antioxidant’s of goji and acai berries combined with the 70% of cocoa in dark chocolate is the equivalent of 12 cups of green tea! Guilt free and happy days!

AntiOx Chocolate - Acai

AntiOx Chocolate - Goji

I absolutely loved the snack bars not just because of its dark chocolate coating, but also its fruity berry filling inside similar to a muesli bar. I've been taking these delicious treats to work whenever I get hungry for a morning or afternoon snack. They do have a decent amount of sweetness thanks to the berries packed into the bar but it's all natural. Perfect for a snack to have while you are at work and your stomach starts to rumble. The AntiOx snack bars comes in three flavours: Acai, Goji (see above) and Chia & Quinoa. Both of the Acai and Goji snack bars were full of soft, chewy and flavoursome goodness. The Chia and Quinoa snack bar has more crispy bits like chia seeds and quinoa seeds but it still retains that chewy and fruity texture. The latter is the ideal choice if you would like to have a boost in calcium, protein, iron, fibre, omega-3 and vitamins B and E.

Make your own gelato flavour with FBI Radio & Gelato Messina!

Ever dream about creating your own gelato flavour? Reckon you can do a better job than some of the gelato places in your city? Thanks to Gelato Messina and FBI Radio, you can make this dream possible! As part of their 10 year anniversary celebration, FBI radio is doing a competition for listeners, foodies and gelato addicts to create their own FBIcecream flavour that will be available at Gelato Messina for a strictly limited time. I have listened to FBI radio regularly when I was younger and it has been a fantastic indie radio station for the youth of Australia whether it's tuning to your fave music show, listening to interviews or discussing about various current issues. Heaps of well known Aussie musicians have got their big break on FBI radio before the mainstream stations start paying attention. Gotye is a notable example. Also, has it really been 10 years?! Feels like it was their 2nd anniversary celebration yesterday!

Whether you have been listening to FBI radio on the radio, online or just keep up to date with their actions via social media or even if you are only a fan of Gelato Messina; you get the chance to make your own Messina flavour with doughnuts as the key ingredient. Everything else is your own imagination! At Messina, everything is made fresh, natural, raw and from scratch so whatever idea you come up with, I'm sure they can make it.

If I get the chance, I would get a chocolate doughnut gelato (with doughnut pieces :)) mixed with dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate pieces and cookie dough. And topped with chocolate syrup and salted caramel. I call it Charlie's Dream.

I'm sure there are plenty of much more creative and less messy examples out there. To submit your entry, you can do either of the following:
1. email your entry to fbicecream@fbiradio.com with your flavour creation, or
2.  post your entry on Twitter or Instagram with #fbicecream as your hashtag.

What's in it for you? The winner will have their flavour in Gelato Messina stores from June 7-14. Plus they will receive two 1.5 litre tubs of any Messina flavour of choice and a 500 mls of the winning FBIcecream! That's 3.5 litres of gelato! ZOMGGGG!

For more details on the competition, check out the FBIcecream page at http://fbiradio.com/fbicecream/

Entries close on Thursday 30th May 2013 so get your creative caps happening before it's too late!
